monoprint Photoshop
because monoprint uses black and white with harsh tones it
can be easily manipulated using digital media in which the tones can be easily
separated and worked on, the easiest method to achieve this would be to create
a copy of the image and set the layer to multiply mode, this will make the
white and grey areas translucent or transparent depending on how dark the image
is, this allows colour to be added to the image, while maintaining the tone of
the image. another method that can be used is to use the threshold effect, this
will convert the image to solid black and white with the tolerance as to what
becomes black or white being adjustable, this make the image much sharper
however there is no gradient so some of the texture can be lost in the image.
threshold
the applications using the threshold effect can often be
used to create a more dramatic effect and are much better used for more
abstract effects because a lot of detail can be lost in this process. for this
piece in particular I have used a very dark and somewhat haunting monoprint of
what had been intended to be a dogs skull as I had used a stencil of that.
multiply
this setting is often used by artists who draw traditionally
but colour digitally because of the nature of this setting.
using this I decided to colour the image using this dark but
muted tones for one and multi-colour for another
this process can be used within my theme as old photographs
were quite grainy, similar to this process I can make the image more grainy using Photoshop as well as make the
tones more similar such as the brightness and contrast. the issue for this is
that I will have to draw on the ink freehand which is an issue for me as
portraiture is not my strong suit and therefore will most likely not turn out
as intended.
