nails and thread
nails and thread
thread is traditionally used for joining sheets of fabric
and decoration on fabric, however more recently thread has been used for many
other applications in art, often to give a representation of connection, wither
that be through links in a crime scene or to give a visual image to fate,
showing how everyone is twisted and entertained whether they know it or not.
however some people have taken to using thread entirely within art to replace
what would have been achieved using a pencil or brush, with the overall finish
being new and exciting as the applications for thread as a primary medium are
very varied with each having a very different result, for example;
this first experiment was used because cork is pongy and
does not require much effort to push the nails through the material in addition
to this I did not have access to nay flat boards at the time ad did not want to
use the wall space for the first experiment. because I have used gold as a colour
for the cork I decided to use green thread as this is a dark colour that works
well with the gold, in terms of pattern I side a simple diamond layout of the
screws, this would allow me to create a wider range of patterns using the
placement. in summary I'm not entirely sure that thread and nails is an ideal
method for me as only straight lines can be created in addition to this it is
very easy to lose a lot of progress if the thread unravels, however the overall
effect is appealing as it adds another layer on the cork and brings it out,
however this would be better applied to a larger surface, or to a completely
two dimensional one.

figure
reflecting on the last piece I have used a flat piece of
board as a surface as this will allow for more freedom over form. to prepare the surface I used spray paint to make the board black and smudged it with gold and silver to juxtapose the green thread,
however the dark colours do not mix well with the
background, I should have used lighter thread, however the other light colours
in the background may have taken attention away from this.

shoe
to bring my two themes of transport and family together I
have used a shoe as a canvas for my thread work, I have used a shoe as this
gives a connotation to progress and advancement while still maintaining
identity. as the surface of the shoe is curved and quite difficult to push
nails it would be very hard to create a figurative image as it may clash with the
existing representation, therefore I have used line to define the composition.
