Debbie Smyth Often uses large scale installation A British artists that is most famous for her works using nails linked in colour by threads, each of her works take hours or even days to complete because of the intricacy involved however the final outcomes are more than worth the time taken as it shows. the subjects within her work can vary massively with many of her works being paid commissions as her work has become very desirable for many different individuals and companies. ” I feel as if I am taking thread out of its comfort zone, presenting it on monumental scale and creating an eye-catching, and in some case jaw dropping effect” Juliet d Collins Uses more life drawing and different fabrics fabric the largest aspect of her work would be the use of layering to create different effects Harriet popham Freehand sewing I was drawn to this artist mostly because she uses line and form to define her work in which she creates the outline and structur...

monoprint

Image
work shops screen 1  screen 2 screen 3 monoprint Photoshop because monoprint uses black and white with harsh tones it can be easily manipulated using digital media in which the tones can be easily separated and worked on, the easiest method to achieve this would be to create a copy of the image and set the layer to multiply mode, this will make the white and grey areas translucent or transparent depending on how dark the image is, this allows colour to be added to the image, while maintaining the tone of the image. another method that can be used is to use the threshold effect, this will convert the image to solid black and white with the tolerance as to what becomes black or white being adjustable, this make the image much sharper however there is no gradient so some of the texture can be lost in the image. threshold the applications using the threshold effect can often be used to create a mor...

artist statement

Image
artist statement within all related by blood and bond there are similarities and differences, subtle details that those close can discern. representing these differences as family would see, I have used colour to portray the lineage along with portraiture, how the faces of two children are like two shades of purple created by red and blue. to represent this I have used a white sheet in which I have spray painted portraits and overlaid them with thread, the colours are the personality and lineage combined, with a red for self-assurance and pride, along with blue for compassion and selflessness, from those is spirit, an unyielding freedom from which many more shades are possible. with each generation the hue changes, sometimes more from the mother, or sometimes more from the father, perhaps even having an equal share of both, and from that rarely anyone is the same amongst this prismatic show of individuality and bond. process  with a lot of my work, complexity seems to be...

nails and thread

Image
nails and thread thread is traditionally used for joining sheets of fabric and decoration on fabric, however more recently thread has been used for many other applications in art, often to give a representation of connection, wither that be through links in a crime scene or to give a visual image to fate, showing how everyone is twisted and entertained whether they know it or not. however some people have taken to using thread entirely within art to replace what would have been achieved using a pencil or brush, with the overall finish being new and exciting as the applications for thread as a primary medium are very varied with each having a very different result, for example; cork this first experiment was used because cork is pongy and does not require much effort to push the nails through the material in addition to this I did not have access to nay flat boards at the time ad did not want to use the wall space for the first experiment. because I have used gold ...

jackson pollock

Image
Jackson Pollock 1912-1956 Abstract expressionism – drip painting Inspiration from Pablo Picasso- earlier work Jackson Pollock was inspired by the abstract expressionism movement, developing his processes to become more and more expressive, leaving form behind him in place of emotion and line, to create marks without form. Jackson started his career with far more figurative paintings with abstract expressionism being a smaller element within his work; however, this changed after he began to overlay one of his paintings with several layers of paint using a brush, beginning as marks that overplayed and juxtaposed the initial piece, and developing from that until the overlaying lines became the whole of his works. one factor that may have influenced the evolution of his process may have been the first and second world war with many people turning to expressive art as an escape from the horrors that war brings, allowing the artists to express themselves in a way words cann...

marbling with spray paint

Image
because spray paint is oil based and does not mix with water but forms a layer on the surface when an object is dipped in it surface becomes coated in the paint layer and leaves a completely covered finish. I found that mixing the paint on the water surface creates a marbled appearance unlike what could be achieved using spray paint alone. wire my personal favourite of the pieces created so far using an old cable, I believe this works best as the black surface mixes best with the spray paint cork the first experiment after using spray paint mixed with glue and water I noticed that without mixing the spray paint stays to the surface of the mixture and becomes harder to mix in the more water that is added, following this observation I believed that this could be used as a marbling technique. to test this I used a cork as it would be able to fit into the small container and was the closest item to hand, I found that when spray paint is applied to the surface of the wat...

fabric

fabric work pattern types often when a traditional craft becomes mechanised the art form is lost, however in the case of sewing the development of newer machines have allowed for a variety of decorative and functional stich patterns,   of which are most often used as a boarder because of the repetitive nature of the stich, my personal favourite of these would be the crescent stich, however this does take the longest and causes the machine to shake a lot. slashing and folding within the fashion industry two popular processes are slashing on folding, slashing is based on layering fabrics and cutting the surface and intermediate layers, followed by fraying the ends, this is especially effective when used with selective colour pallets, for example green and gold work well, this process works well on areas of motion such as elbow sections on sleeves . folding is a another method that involves pinching the fabric to create a crease, this allows shaping and decoration. despi...
